专利说明:

A method of manufacturing a poleTECHNICAL FIELD OF THE INVENTION AND BACKGROUNDARTThe present invention relates to a method of manufacturing a polewith a polygonal or round cross-section out of a flat blank ofgalvanized sheet coated by a decorative coating layer.
Poles manufactured by carrying out such a method may be of anyconceivable type, but light poles arranged along roads may bementioned as one typical example without for that sake restrictingthe invention thereto.
“Decorative coating layer” is to be interpreted broadly and shallcover any type of layer applied on a galvanized sheet forimproving or just changing the appearance thereof, especially asuitable paint or lacquer.lt is known through WO 2008/127168 A1 to manufacture a polewith a polygonal or round cross-section out of a flat blank ofgalvanized sheet. The blank is in this method shaped to a pole bybeing roll formed, and opposite longitudinal sheet borders forminga longitudinal seam of the sheet shaped to a pole are then weldedtogether by means of a laser. The use of laser welding results ina weld joint being stronger than obtained by traditional welding,so that a thinner sheet may be used for manufacturing the poleand by that costs be saved. The thin weld joint obtained by laserwelding will heal spontaneously by formation of zinc oxidescovering the joint and protecting it against corrosive attacks.
However, would laser welding be used as joining technic in amethod according to the introduction, in which a pole ismanufactured out of a flat blank of galvanized sheet coated by adecorative coating layer the surface layer of the sheet in theregion of the weld joint damaged by the laser welding will not healspontaneously, since the coating layer will form an obstacle tomigration of zinc necessary for forming zinc oxides at the weldjoint.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTIONThe object of the present invention is to provide a method of thetype defined in the introduction being improved in at least someaspect with respect to such methods already known.
This object is according to the invention obtained by providingsuch a method with the following steps:a) forming the blank to the shape of a pole,b) welding opposite longitudinal sheet borders forming alongitudinal seam of the sheet shaped to a pole together bymeans of a laser, andc) applying a material layer with corrosion preventing ability ona joint resulting from the welding so as to cover this weld jointby this material layer.
This means that the preferred technic of laser welding may beused for manufacturing poles out of a flat blank of galvanizedsheet coated by a decorative coating layer and a protectionagainst corrosion of the surface layer of the sheet used in theregion of the longitudinal weld joint will be obtained in spite of theabsence of the phenomenon of spontaneous healing.
According to an embodiment of the invention the pole ismanufactured out of a flat blank of galvanized sheet coated by acoating layer of paint or lacquer, which are coating layersfrequently used for galvanized sheets of this type, and the pole isaccording to another embodiment of the invention manufacturedout of a flat blank in the form of a PRELAQ (trademark) sheet.
This may result in a pole with a pleasant appearance adapted tothe intended use thereof.
According to another embodiment of the invention it is a materiallayer in the form of an anti-corrosive lacquer that is applied instep c). This constitutes a preferred way of obtaining preventionof future corrosion in the region of the weld joint, and applicationof a material layer in the form of an anti-corrosive seamcompound or paste constitutes another option to obtain this.
According to another embodiment of the invention it is a materiallayer with the same colour or substantially the same colour as thecolour of said coating layer or a transparent material layer that isapplied in step c). This means that the presence of the weld jointmay be hidden or nearly hidden and have little or no influence onthe appearance of the surface layer of the pole.
According to another embodiment of the invention said blank is instep a) shaped to a pole having a varying cross-section. Theblank may then according to another embodiment of the inventionin step a) be formed to the shaped of a pole having a cross-section continuously decreasing in one direction, through which apole with a conical shape may be formed.
According to another embodiment of the invention said flat blankis in step a) roll formed to the shape of a pole, which constitutesan advantageous technic to shape a flat blank of this type to apole.
Further advantages as well as advantageous features of theinvention will appear from the description following below.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGSWith reference to the appended drawings below follows a specificdescription of an embodiment of the invention cited as anexample.ln the drawings:Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a pole manufactured by carryingout a method according to an embodiment of the presentinvenüon,Fig. 2 is a cross-section view of the pole shown in Fig. 1, andFig. 3 is a simplified enlarged cross-section view of a region ofthe weld joint of the pole shown in Fig. 1.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF AN EMBODIMENT OF THEINVENTIONFig. 1 illustrates a pole 1 manufactured by carrying out a methodaccording to the present invention and which may for example beintended for use a lamp post. The pole is conically tapered froma bottom end 2 towards a top end 3. The pole has a circular cross-section, which appears from the cross-section view of Fig. 2 takenalong the line II-II in Fig. 1.
The construction of the pole and a method of manufacturing thepole according to an embodiment of the present invention will nowbe described while making reference simultaneously to Figs. 1-3.The pole is manufactured out of a flat blank of galvanized sheet4 coated by a decorative coating layer 5 on both sides thereof.Said flat blank is a PRELAQ (trademark) sheet. This sheet wasalready provided with the dimensions for shaping it directly to apole or was cut to this suited dimensions. The sheet was afterthat formed to the shape of a pole by roll forming, and this technicwill not be further disclosed here, but it may be referred to WO2008/127168 A1 for that sake.
The next step of the manufacturing of the pole was a laser weldingof opposite longitudinal borders 6, 7 forming a longitudinal seamof the sheet shaped to a pole for joining these sheet borders bya weld joint 8. Laser welding of galvanized sheets is a well-knowntechnic, but reference is nevertheless made to EP 2 236 238 B1and WO 2008/127168 A1 for illuminating this technic.
The laser welding damages the surface layer of the sheet 4 in theregion of the weld joint and the decorative coating layer 5prevents zinc migration necessary for forming protecting zincoxides at the weld joint and by that said spontaneous healing fromoccuring. However, a material layer 9 with a corrosion preventingability, such as an anti-corrosive lacquer or an anti-corrosiveseam compound or paste, is applied on the weld joint 8 so as tocover this and by that forming a protection against corrosion ofsaid surface layer damaged. The material layer 9 applied haspreferably the same colour or substantially the same colour asthe colour of the decorative coating layer 5 or is a transparentmaterial layer for obtaining a pleasant appearance of the pole.
The invention is of course not in any way restricted to theembodiment disclosed above, but many possibilities tomodifications thereof would be apparent to a person with skill inthe art without departing from a scope of the invention as definedin the appended claims.
The pole manufactured by carrying out the method may have anyother cross-section than circular, such as polygonal or elliptical, which is covered by the definition of “round”. The pole may alsohave the same cross-section over the entire length thereof or across-section changing stepwisely.
